Has anyone here read any of Sean Hogan's amazing "Screaming" series? Because, dear God, SOMEONE besides me needs to read these things, so I can discuss them!!!
Hogan has published five interconnected books, and now has a Patreon where he's adding new stories, in what can only be described as an interconnected web of Horror that features characters from films both well-known and obscure.
He started out with a book in the PS film series, MIDNIGHT MOVIE MONOGRAPHS, dedicated to the film DEATH LINE (A.K.A. RAW MEAT). Where the rest of the series is comprised of critical examinations of the films in question, Hogan wrote a novella-length work of fiction about Donald Pleasence's character from the movie. Not essential to Hogan's overarching narrative, but a good, solid read for fans of the film.
He kicked it into high gear with the second book, ENGLAND'S SCREAMING, also published by PS. In this volume, he crafts stories drawn from British Horror movies, featuring Damien Thorne from THE OMEN, Count Dracula, The Cenobites and Julia Cotten from HELLRAISER, Julian Karswell from CURSE OF THE DEMON, Duc de Richleau from THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, and dozens of characters well-known and obscure from sources such as THE MEDUSA TOUCH, DEAD OF NIGHT, FRIGHTMARE, BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, KILL LIST, DEAD MAN'S SHOES, THE WICKER MAN, BERBIAN SOUND STUDIO, PEEPING TOM, BRIMSTONE& TREACLE, and so many more, all interacting and crossing over, like a supernatural Marvel movie. The way he ties all of these films together into a massive occult plot that spans centuries is nothing short of breathtaking. This was a book that I couldn't wait to pick up, hated to put down, and dreaded finishing. I kept Wikipedia open for films and characters that I was unfamiliar with, and discovered a ton of films that I hadn't yet seen. The end blew me away.
Next up was THREE MOTHERS, ONE FATHER, which ties together characters from Euro-Horror films and brings them into the ENGLAND'S SCREAMING narrative. Here, hogan explores characters from THE TENANT, THEM, THE NINTH GATE, RAW, LISA AND THE DEVIL, CEMETERY MAN, INSIDE, SUSPIRIA, TENEBRAE, INFERNO, and more, leading to a batshit-crazy occult war that is unforgettable.
I recently discovered that he had a new volume, TWILIGHT'S LAST SCREAMING, featuring characters from American Horror films, such as Greg Stillson from THE DEAD ZONE, The Narrator from THE TWILIGHT ZONE, The Creature from The Black Lagoon, Travis Bickle from TAXI DRIVER, characters from THE WITCH, CANDYMAN, ROSEMARY'S BABY, and more.
He wraps up the series with THAT FATAL SHORE, which ties Aussie-Horror into the narrative, and he's continuing with the aforementioned Patreon stories.
I'd encourage anyone here to check these books out....I doubt you'll be disappointed, and you'll give me someone to discuss them with, lol. Hogan shot onto my favorite Author list immediately after reading his work.
(Sorry to be so long-winded!)
