I suppose it can’t hurt to post something like this on a semi-regular basis for anyone who might be SO BORED as to be interested in my goings-on. Right now I’m working on a short story about a pre-Sumerian demon on a passenger plane. I’m in the process of blurbing the awesome and outrageous writer Bridgett Nelson; yesterday I read a new story of hers, and it really messed up my head! I think I need to be on meds now. Last night, I reread E.F. Benson’s “At the Farmhouse” (published in 1923) and for old time stuff it’s pretty hideous; it’s about a guy who wants to kill his wife, and the way Benson gets into the main character’s head and projects to the reader his percolating, gleefully insane, absolute sparkling hatred of the wife is VERY unsettling. Benson wrote a number of stories that were very extreme for their day. Since New Year’s, I’ve watched a bevy of horror movies that were quite good: Troll (the 2022 one), The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Town Full of Ghosts, a Swedish (I think) flick called Breeder, Eat Brains Love, and Witch’s House (a contemporary adaptation of HPL’s Dreams in the Witch House but with some welcome eroticism, and a creepy old house that would impress Lovecraft himself.) I think my favorite flick of 2022 is Dashcam: hilarious yet non-stop terrifying (and you’ll love the “Butt Buffet” song!) I Blame Society is a great movie as well, about as original as it gets. And so far my favorite so-bad-it’s-good movie is–yes!–Amityville Karen. Trust me! Tonight I will rewatch The Screaming Skull, which was made a year after I was born, and Slaughter House Slumber Party. And now it’s back to my pre-Sumerian demon. Everybody have a great weekend!
