The last live concert I went to was Tool in December of 2019. The pandemic was a whisper on international news. Last night I went to my first show since, masked (maybe the only masked person there?). I saw Puscifer live here in Tulsa at the Tulsa Theater (formerly the Brady Theater). It was a blast, hilarious, much more than a musical performance, a vaudevillian show. I’ve now seen Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer live. Maynard is a helluva performer.
Since the pandemic started letting up and live shows started happening again, I've been to so many shows that I fear my wife will divorce me if I keep it up.I'm going to see WASP and Armored Saint later this week.
I'm not really a big fan of live performances that aren't classical or operatic. The wife and I go to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center every so often, or to an opera at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, but being an Auld Phart, I'm not at all interested in engaging in the logistical challenge of schlepping into Nashville from the wilds of Rutherford County to spend hours finding parking and fighting my way through crowds of intoxicated bridesmaids followed by being packed into some venue where the acoustics don't really matter because forty thousand drunks are making more noise than the act on stage, or a couple of six-sheets-in-the-wind cougars won't sit the fuck down in front of the seat I paid good money to plant my ass in, then fighting my way out of town again through morons who don't understand the freeway system or the basics of automotive navigation or how to compel their vehicles to proceed expeditiously. So, when She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed asked me the other morning as I was pouring my first cup of coffee how much I hated Billy Joel, I had a sudden very bad feeling. I knew she'd already bought the tickets, and that I was going to be obliged to accompany her to whatever fresh hell this was going to be.
I told her I didn't feel much one way or the other about him. She informed me he was playing at the Titans stadium in May with Stevie Nicks. I reminded her we already saw Stevie Nicks a few years back. The best thing about that concert, which I didn't mention, was that Bozz Scaggs opened for her, and that her backup band included legendary saxophonist 'Blue' Lou Marini, formerly of The Blues Bothers Band. She gave me no opportunity to opt out, but a lot can happen between now and May, so I didn't resist as hard as I normally would consider doing. But wouldn't dare, because when Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
To add to my fear and loathing, she asked me this past weekend how I felt about Pink. I was reluctantly truthful and told her that Pink was one of the very few performers of the past thirty years whose music wasn't entirely awful. That concert is in Washington, D.C. next August. Again, a long time off and a ten hour drive away. Too early to panic.
Oh, frabjous day, calloo, callay! She has decided to take two or three of our daughters to Pink and leave me at home, and my youngest has volunteered to take my place at Billy Joel/Stevie Nicks. I seem to be off the hook for the nonce.

Love live music. The majority of the shows I hit these days are either in Silver Spring, MD or at Lovedrafts in PA. Both venues are personal favorites. I saw The Deftones not so long ago, and that was an incredible show.
The Dayglo Abortions came to my town a couple weeks back and that was the first live music I'd seen since Mountain Goats before the pandemic. Yob is coming to Vancouver with Earth, Khemmis, Heavy Trip and somebody else in May, so I might make the trip over to see that.
reggielutz: @johiay: lol it was a bar in Mountaintop PA. Currently the Mountaintop Pub and Eatery. I wasn't around at all when they filmed there but I just heard about it. And I didn't see the episode but it aired last night. My brain just went, "Whaaaat!?!"
